Supporters gathered for a Lupus awareness event and balloon release at Teddy Jack's Hub City Grill on Saturday afternoon.
The Lupus Foundation of America says an estimated 1.5 million Americans have a form of Lupus.
With no known cure, the Lubbock Lupus support group, a branch of the Lone Star Chapter of the Lupus Foundation of America, works to raise awareness and funds.
But this struggle is personal for Teddy Jack's owner Curtis Jordan.
"My son, Matthew, contracted Lupus roughly about, almost exactly two years ago," Jordan said. "We didn't know much about it at all."
With so much unknown, Curtis decided to turn to something he could control: raising awareness throughout this month by selling shirts and wrist bands, and donating a portion of sales for the month to the Lone Star Chapter of the Lupus Foundation of America.
Curtis says today, Matthew is doing well and in remission.
But with no known cure and little treatment, it's something he will always live with.
"He knows that it's a lifelong battle," he said.
Matt Jordan spoke at the Lupus awareness event on Saturday:
"To see all you folks here today and to see where we've come, it's really touching," Matt said. "This is not something like cancer or heart disease where there's lots of bigger programs and more awareness to it, research behind it. This is something that is so unknown, that hits all of us in so many different ways - some of us way more severe than others..."
Matt said he hopes this is just year one of the event, hoping that it will help people "know more about, to know how we can treat it, that we can start to find cures for it and what causes it - that's what this is all about."
Matt hopes the event will get bigger every year. Their goal is to raise $20,000 this year. Matt hopes they can "blow that out of the water."
Teddy Jack's will donate a portion of each guest check to the Lupus Foundation of America through May 31.
